Food and wine are very much part of the experience. We'll venture into the Alentejo for private winery experiences and an olive-oil tasting, discover vintage Port in Porto, and spend a day among the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. A private river cruise, memorable meals with carefully selected wines, and opportunities to explore Portugal's exceptional culinary traditions bring another dimension to our journey. And because the best journeys leave room to simply enjoy where you are, we've deliberately built in time for personal discovery. Fátima Excursion: An optional visit to one of the world's most significant Marian sanctuaries, offering time for exploration, prayer, and reflection.
Michelin-Starred Dining: Eleven in Lisbon ($300 per person) and The Yeatman in Porto ($500 per person), featuring tasting menus, wine pairings, and transportation. Guests may express interest on the registration form and will be contacted later to coordinate reservations, subject to availability.
Algarve Extension | June 22–26, 2027: Four additional hotel nights, including three at Made Inn Faro and one at Eurostars EXE Liberdade in Lisbon, with coastal sightseeing, regional wine experiences, and special group dining as outlined in the extension itinerary. Airfare Information: Airfare is not included in the published tour price. Afar & Away Travel intends to coordinate flights from Los Angeles (LAX), with group airline arrangements possible if at least 10 travelers are interested in flying together. Day 1 – Sunday, June 13 | Portugal Awaits

Today we depart Los Angeles International Airport aboard TAP Air Portugal, Portugal's national airline and a member of the Star Alliance, on our nonstop overnight flight to Lisbon. Settle in, relax, and prepare for ten days of beautiful landscapes, exceptional wines, fascinating history, and the warmth of Portuguese hospitality. From Lisbon's colorful neighborhoods and historic churches to the vineyards of the Douro Valley and the charming cities of northern Portugal, an extraordinary journey awaits.

Day 2 – Monday, June 14 | Welcome to Lisbon

Welcome to Lisbon, one of Europe's sunniest and most inviting capitals. Upon arrival, we'll transfer to the welcoming Eurostars EXE Liberdade, conveniently located near Lisbon's elegant Avenida da Liberdade, one of the city's most celebrated boulevards. Begin with a relaxed introduction to this beautiful city of tiled façades, grand avenues, and waterfront neighborhoods, including a leisurely walk and a visit to the lively Time Out Market, where some of Lisbon's most celebrated culinary traditions come together under one roof. The afternoon offers time to settle in, relax, or explore the neighborhood at your own pace. Tonight, we'll gather for a welcome dinner with wine and raise our first glass to the adventures ahead.

Day 3 – Tuesday, June 15 | Lisbon: History, Culture & Discovery

Today we discover the many layers of Portugal's captivating capital. Begin in Belém, where magnificent monuments celebrate the country's extraordinary Age of Discovery, and enjoy a stop for coffee and the legendary Pastéis de Belém. Continue into atmospheric Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, with its winding lanes, colorful buildings, and remarkable views. We'll also visit the Church of Saint Anthony, built on the site traditionally associated with the Lisbon-born saint's family home. Throughout the day, our guide will bring to life the stories, traditions, and cultural influences that have shaped Portugal over the centuries. Tonight, we'll gather again for dinner with wine.

Day 4 – Wednesday, June 16 | Alentejo Wine Country & Historic Évora

Leave Lisbon behind for a day in the beautiful Alentejo, where cork trees, olive groves, and vineyards stretch across the countryside. We'll visit two carefully selected wine estates for private experiences introducing us to the region's distinctive wines, including an engaging, hands-on introduction to the art of Portuguese wine blending. Along the way, we'll discover the region's olive-oil traditions with an estate tasting. There will be plenty to enjoy, but the day is as much about meeting the people and understanding the land as it is about what's in the glass. We'll also explore UNESCO-listed Évora, where Roman ruins, medieval streets, and an impressive cathedral reveal more than 2,000 years of history. Return to Lisbon after a memorable day in one of Portugal's great food-and-wine regions.

Day 5 – Thursday, June 17 | Lisbon, Your Way — or Discover Fátima

Today is deliberately yours. Sleep in, explore Lisbon's historic neighborhoods, browse the boutiques along Avenida da Liberdade, visit a museum, or settle into a sidewalk café and simply enjoy the rhythm of the city. Those wishing to discover another dimension of Portugal's heritage may join an optional excursion to Fátima, one of the world's most important Marian pilgrimage destinations. Here, visitors can explore the renowned sanctuary, learn about the apparitions of 1917, and enjoy time for personal reflection or prayer. Whether your interests lean toward art, architecture, history, shopping, or spiritual discovery, today offers the freedom to experience Portugal in your own way.

Day 6 – Friday, June 18 | Porto & the Art of Port

This morning we travel north by train to Porto, one of Europe's most atmospheric cities and the historic heart of Portugal's famous Port wine tradition. A private guide introduces us to its UNESCO-listed historic center, where grand squares, colorful buildings, and lively shopping streets lead toward the Douro River. Discover Porto Cathedral and the picturesque Ribeira waterfront, with its sweeping views across the river. Later, we'll visit the renowned Graham's Port Lodge for a premium vintage Port tasting, complemented by gourmet cheese and chocolate pairings. It's a wonderful introduction to the wines that have made this region famous around the world. Tonight, we'll gather for dinner with wine and enjoy our first evening together in northern Portugal.

Day 7 – Saturday, June 19 | Into the Spectacular Douro Valley

Yesterday we tasted Port; today we travel into the breathtaking landscape where it begins. Venture into the Douro Valley, where steep vineyard terraces descend toward the river through one of the world's oldest formally demarcated wine regions. Spend the day discovering the traditions of winemaking through carefully curated winery visits, guided tastings, and stories of the families who have shaped this remarkable landscape for generations. Then take to the Douro itself for a river cruise, enjoying spectacular views of the valley from the water. It's a day that brings together some of Portugal's most beautiful scenery, outstanding wines, and unforgettable experiences. Return to Porto this evening, where the night is yours to enjoy at leisure. For those seeking something truly exceptional, an optional two-Michelin-starred dinner at The Yeatman offers the opportunity to experience contemporary Portuguese cuisine at its finest, with an exquisite tasting menu, carefully selected wine pairings, and spectacular views overlooking Porto.

Day 8 – Sunday, June 20 | Braga: Portugal's Historic Heart

Today we travel by train to Braga, one of Portugal's oldest cities and a fascinating center of history, architecture, and cultural heritage. Often called the country's spiritual heart, Braga offers much more than its celebrated churches, with elegant squares, beautiful gardens, lively cafés, and centuries of Portuguese history waiting to be discovered. Our guided exploration introduces us to the city's historic center and remarkable landmarks, including its magnificent cathedral and religious architecture. For those interested, the day also offers an opportunity to appreciate the spiritual traditions that have helped shape northern Portugal. Return to Porto by train, with the evening free to enjoy the city at your own pace.

Day 9 – Monday, June 21 | Return to Lisbon & A Farewell Celebration

After breakfast, we board our train for the return journey to Lisbon, enjoying views of Portugal's changing landscapes along the way. Upon arrival, we'll transfer back to Eurostars EXE Liberdade and enjoy some free time for last-minute shopping, personal sightseeing, or simply relaxing before our final evening together. Perhaps visit a favorite café, explore another neighborhood, or pick up a few Portuguese specialties to bring home. Tonight, we'll gather for a special farewell dinner with wine, celebrating the experiences, friendships, and memories we've shared throughout our journey. From Lisbon's historic streets to the vineyards of the Alentejo and Douro Valley, it's been a wonderful introduction to the many treasures of Portugal.

Day 10 – Tuesday, June 22 | Until We Meet Again — or Onward to the Algarve!

For guests concluding their journey today, enjoy one final Portuguese breakfast before transferring to Lisbon Airport for our return flight to Los Angeles. After discovering Portugal's historic cities, celebrated wines, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, we'll head home with wonderful memories and perhaps a few bottles of Portuguese wine carefully packed in our luggage.

Airfare & Flight Arrangements

Afar & Away Travel plans to coordinate round-trip flights on TAP Air Portugal's nonstop service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Lisbon (LIS) for travelers who wish to fly together.

If 10 or more travelers are interested in flying together, we can explore a group airfare arrangement with TAP Air Portugal, subject to airline availability and confirmation.

Travelers may select either return date:

Tuesday, June 22, 2027: Following the main tour.
Saturday, June 26, 2027: Following the optional Algarve extension.

Simple & Convenient Payment Schedule

Your initial deposit secures your reservation for The Soul of Portugal. The amount depends on whether you select the optional Algarve extension and/or our Trip Protection Plan.

Main Tour Only: $1,500 per person
Main Tour + Algarve Extension: $1,800 per person
Main Tour + Trip Protection: $1,950 per person
Main Tour + Algarve Extension + Trip Protection: $2,250 per person

The Algarve extension requires an additional $300 deposit per person.

Our optional Trip Protection Plan is $450 per person and covers both the main Portugal tour and the Algarve extension for guests who choose to participate in both. There is no additional Trip Protection charge for adding the extension.

All payments are made directly to Afar & Away Travel. The remaining tour balance will be due according to the final payment schedule outlined below.

Payment 2 – Final Balance

The final payment deadline depends on whether you select our optional Trip Protection Plan.

Without Trip Protection: Final payment due April 14, 2027 (60 days before departure).

With Trip Protection: Final payment due April 29, 2027 (45 days before departure).

Your remaining balance will reflect your selected tour package, any applicable single room supplement, and the optional Algarve extension.

Airfare and optional dining experiences will be coordinated separately, with payment details provided when arrangements are confirmed.

Our home in Lisbon is the Eurostars EXE Liberdade, a contemporary hotel conveniently located near Avenida da Liberdade, one of the city's most elegant and celebrated boulevards. With its beautiful tree-lined avenues, fashionable boutiques, inviting cafés, and excellent restaurants, this part of Lisbon offers an ideal introduction to the Portuguese capital. The hotel's location provides a comfortable base for discovering Lisbon's historic neighborhoods, magnificent architecture, lively squares, and rich cultural traditions. After our overnight journey from the United States, we'll have time to settle in and begin enjoying the city's welcoming atmosphere. During our stay, guests can easily explore independently, discover a favorite neighborhood restaurant, browse the shops, or simply relax with a coffee at a nearby café. We'll return to the Eurostars EXE Liberdade for our final evening in Lisbon, bringing our journey full circle before our departure home.

Something Special Is Worth the Wait

Porto is one of Europe's most captivating cities, and we're taking particular care in selecting just the right hotel for our three-night stay. Our goal is to find a property that combines comfort, character, and a convenient location, giving guests an excellent base from which to discover Porto's magnificent architecture, colorful neighborhoods, celebrated restaurants, and centuries-old wine traditions. Porto will be our home for some of the journey's most memorable experiences, including a premium vintage Port tasting at Graham's, a spectacular day exploring the vineyards of the Douro Valley, and a visit to historic Braga. After a full day of discoveries, we want our guests to have the freedom to enjoy Porto's wonderful atmosphere, whether that means exploring a neighborhood restaurant, enjoying an evening stroll, or simply relaxing at the hotel. What Is the Weather Like in June?

June is a wonderful time to discover Portugal. Summer is just beginning, bringing abundant sunshine, warm temperatures, beautiful landscapes, and some of the longest days of the year. It's an especially appealing season for a journey that combines historic cities, celebrated wine regions, spectacular scenery, and time to enjoy Portugal's relaxed outdoor lifestyle.

In Lisbon, daytime temperatures typically reach the upper 70s to low 80s°F, with pleasantly mild evenings that are ideal for strolling through historic neighborhoods or enjoying dinner outdoors. The Alentejo, located farther inland, is generally warmer, with afternoon temperatures often reaching the mid-80s°F and occasionally climbing into the 90s. Fortunately, the region's dry summer climate makes it particularly inviting for winery visits, sightseeing, and enjoying the beautiful countryside.

Farther north, Porto benefits from the cooling influence of the Atlantic, with daytime temperatures generally in the low to mid-70s°F. Mornings and evenings can be refreshingly cool, making a light sweater or jacket useful. In the nearby Douro Valley, however, temperatures can be considerably warmer, often reaching the 80s and sometimes the 90s as the terraced vineyards absorb the summer sunshine.

One of June's greatest pleasures is the extraordinary amount of daylight. With sunset approaching 9:00 PM, there's plenty of time to explore, linger over a leisurely meal, enjoy an evening walk, or simply soak up the atmosphere of Portugal's beautiful cities and towns.

June is also one of Portugal's drier months, particularly around Lisbon and the Alentejo. While an occasional shower remains possible, especially in northern Portugal, extended periods of rain are less common than in spring or winter. We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. A sunhat and reusable water bottle are particularly helpful during our wine-country excursions.

The vineyards are especially beautiful at this time of year, with lush green vines stretching across the hillsides of the Alentejo and Douro Valley. The countryside still retains much of its spring color, while the warmer weather creates wonderful opportunities to experience Portugal's outdoor cafés, picturesque squares, and spectacular landscapes.

Continuing to the Algarve?

For guests joining our optional four-night Algarve extension, June is an equally delightful time to experience Portugal's southern coast. Around Faro, daytime temperatures typically reach the upper 70s to low 80s°F, with abundant sunshine, warm afternoons, and comfortable evenings. The Atlantic Ocean can still feel refreshingly cool, but the weather is generally excellent for coastal sightseeing, boat excursions, exploring historic towns, and relaxing beside the sea.

From Lisbon's colorful streets and the historic churches of Braga to Porto's riverside neighborhoods and the vineyard-covered hills of the Douro Valley, June offers wonderful opportunities to experience Portugal's beauty, culture, and traditions.

The Flavors of Portugal

Great food and wine are an essential part of The Soul of Portugal. While our optional Michelin-starred dining experiences offer the opportunity to explore some of Portugal's finest restaurants, exceptional food will be part of the entire journey—not something reserved for those two special evenings.

Throughout the program, we've thoughtfully selected our included meals to complement the places we're visiting. Portugal has one of Europe's most exciting culinary traditions, shaped by the Atlantic, the countryside, and centuries of exploration. Expect beautifully prepared seafood and fresh fish, flavorful meats, local cheeses, exceptional olive oils, seasonal produce, and distinctive regional specialties, alongside a new generation of chefs bringing contemporary creativity to traditional Portuguese flavors.

Wine is equally important to the experience. We'll taste it where it's made in the Alentejo and Douro Valley, discover the centuries-old tradition of Port in Porto, and continue enjoying Portuguese wines around the dinner table. The goal isn't to turn every meal into a formal occasion—it's to eat and drink exceptionally well while keeping the atmosphere relaxed, welcoming, and enjoyable.

Our journey will also feature memorable evenings together, beginning with a welcome dinner in Lisbon and continuing with specially selected group dining experiences along the way. On our final evening, we'll gather for a celebratory farewell dinner, sharing wonderful food, Portuguese wines, and memories of the places and experiences we've discovered together.

Every scheduled group dinner will include wine or, for those who prefer something different, a beer or non-alcoholic beverage. We want everyone to be able to raise a glass in the way they prefer, without drinks becoming an unexpected additional expense at our included dinners.

We also believe that great dining means making sure everyone at the table can enjoy the experience. Afar & Away Travel will collect dietary information before departure and work with our hotels and restaurants to accommodate vegetarian preferences, food allergies, gluten-free requirements, and other dietary needs whenever possible.

And because discovering a country's culinary traditions is also about making your own discoveries, we've included free evenings and opportunities to explore local restaurants, neighborhood cafés, and hidden culinary gems at your own pace.

What Is Michelin-Starred Dining—and Why Does It Matter?

Few distinctions in the culinary world carry the international recognition of a Michelin Star. The Michelin Guide dates to the early 1900s, with its Star system beginning in 1926. Today, anonymous Michelin inspectors evaluate restaurants using consistent criteria, including the quality of ingredients, harmony of flavors, mastery of technique, the personality expressed through the cuisine, and consistency over time.

Stars are awarded for the quality of the cooking rather than lavish décor or formal service, and restaurants are reassessed regularly. One Michelin Star recognizes high-quality cooking worthy of a stop; Two Stars signify excellent cooking worthy of a detour; and Three Stars, Michelin's highest distinction, recognize exceptional cuisine worthy of a special journey.

Our first opportunity comes in Lisbon at Eleven, an elegant contemporary restaurant overlooking Eduardo VII Park. Chef Joachim Koerper brings decades of experience to Mediterranean-inspired cuisine built around seasonal ingredients, presented with creativity, precision, and a distinctly modern approach. Its elevated setting and views across the park provide a beautiful Lisbon backdrop for an evening devoted to food and wine. Elegant without losing the relaxed spirit of our journey, Eleven offers an excellent introduction to Lisbon's sophisticated contemporary dining scene. This experience is intentionally scheduled during our day at leisure in Lisbon, allowing guests to choose between discovering the city's restaurants independently or joining us for something exceptional. The restaurant's remarkable wine program is especially fitting in a city so closely tied to wine. Combined with panoramic views across the Douro toward historic Porto, the setting makes the evening every bit as memorable as the cuisine. For guests who choose to join us, the evening will be designed as a complete experience, with transportation from our hotel, a multi-course tasting menu, and carefully selected wine pairings included. Day 10 – Tuesday, June 22 | Welcome to the Algarve & A Special Evening in Faro

While some of our fellow travelers begin their journey home, we continue south by train toward Faro, the gateway to Portugal's beautiful Algarve region. Known for its golden beaches, dramatic coastal scenery, and relaxed atmosphere, the Algarve offers a delightful contrast to the cities and wine regions we've already explored. Upon arrival, we'll transfer to the Made Inn Faro, our home for the next three nights. After settling in, enjoy some free time to discover Faro's charming streets, waterfront cafés, and welcoming atmosphere. Tonight, we'll gather for a special dinner at a carefully selected restaurant tucked away in the heart of Faro's historic Old Town. Surrounded by centuries of history, we'll enjoy an exceptional dining experience celebrating the flavors, wines, and culinary traditions of southern Portugal. It's a wonderful way to begin our Algarve adventure!

Day 11 – Wednesday, June 23 | The Algarve's Spectacular Coastline

Today we discover the extraordinary natural beauty that has made the Algarve one of Europe's most celebrated coastal destinations. Travel along the region's spectacular shoreline, where golden limestone cliffs rise above turquoise waters and hidden beaches nestle between dramatic rock formations. Our guided excursion introduces us to some of the area's most remarkable coastal landscapes, including scenic walking paths and a planned cave experience, subject to weather and sea conditions. Along the way, we'll enjoy opportunities to appreciate the region's beautiful scenery, charming seaside communities, and distinctive character. Return to Faro with the evening free to explore or enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 12 – Thursday, June 24 | Faro & Algarve Wine Country

While Portugal's Douro and Alentejo regions may be better known internationally, the Algarve has developed a distinctive wine culture of its own. This morning we'll venture into the surrounding countryside to visit selected local wineries, where we'll discover regional grape varieties, meet the people behind the wines, and enjoy guided tastings. Returning to Faro, we'll explore the city's charming Old Town, with its historic gateways, cobblestone streets, beautiful architecture, and cultural landmarks. The afternoon offers time for personal exploration, shopping, or relaxing at one of the city's many welcoming cafés. It's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the Algarve beyond its famous beaches.

Day 13 – Friday, June 25 | Return to Lisbon & Our Final Evening

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the Algarve and travel north to Lisbon for our final night in Portugal. Upon arrival, we'll return to Eurostars EXE Liberdade, with free time to revisit a favorite neighborhood, explore the shops, or simply relax and reflect on the experiences of the past two weeks. Tonight, we'll come together for a special farewell dinner with wine, celebrating the conclusion of our extended journey. From the historic streets of Lisbon and Porto to the vineyards of the Douro Valley and the dramatic shores of the Algarve, we've experienced an extraordinary variety of Portugal's landscapes, flavors, and traditions.
