UK & Irish Studies 2020:

Students from Saint Ignatius, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, and Walsh Jesuit journey to the UK & Ireland together on this academic travel program sponsored by Saint Ignatius High School.

June 10, 2020: Overnight Flight to Glasgow, Scotland

June 11-14, 2020: Scotland

  • In 2020, your adventure will begin in Scotland. Although your plane lands at Glasgow airport and your destination is Edinburgh, it hardly matters because the cities and their airports lie so close together.  Scotland is the kind of place where you could travel around for weeks but can cover a lot of ground in a few days.  Edinburgh will be your home for the next three days.  Students will visit the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and the Scottish National Parliament.  Luckily many of the highlights are within walking distance from each other so you will maximize your time here.

  • Outside of Edinburgh, students will visit Scotland's oldest University: St. Andrew’s and Stirling Castle.

  • There is a strong connection between Northern Ireland and Scotland. Many northern Irish are descended from settlers from Scotland and proudly call themselves “Ulster Scots.”  Your time here will prepare you for Northern Ireland's unique fusion of Irish and Scottish culture.

June 14-22, 2020: Northern Ireland

  • Students will journey across the Irish Sea (by flight) to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Belfast is the heart of Ulster and the capital of Northern Ireland.  Her old Gaelic name, Beal Feirste means “Mouth of the Farset.”  Belfast is the only city in Ireland to have undergone an Industrial Revolution and has many reminders of her industrial past.

  • Your time in Belfast is completely planned by the Saint Ignatius Irish Studies Program.  The program will include university lectures, prominent guest speakers, immersion experiences in the divided communities of Belfast, and day trips to Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, and Ireland’s only walled city Derry/Londonderry.

June 22-23, 2020: Dublin, Ireland

  • Dublin is one of Europe’s most vibrant and welcoming capitals.  Over the next two days, the group will explore Trinity College, The Book of Kells, Temple Bar, St. Stephen's Green and Christchurch Cathedral. A special focus will be given to Dublin’s revolutionary past and its literary connection.  Students will also have an opportunity to visit the national parliament of Ireland: the Dáil Éireann.

June 23-25, 2020: Achill Island

  • This morning you will depart from Dublin and head to the largest island off the coast of Ireland: Achill Island. You make your way across Ireland to your our final destination will be Achill Island in County Mayo. Crossing into County Mayo is like stepping back in time and Achill Island is Mayo in microcosm.  During your stay, you will explore her pristine beaches, abandoned bogs and deserted dwellings that are scattered across this place of alluring beauty.

  • The majority of people in Greater Cleveland’s Irish community are descended from migrants that made their way to our shores from Achill Island.  During your time in Achill, you will learn about the great migration and their way of life today.  You will also have the opportunity to learn how to surf. Many people do now know that Ireland has some of the best “waves” on earth. This will be a time to chill out and encounter Ireland’s iconic rural west.

June 25-26, 2020: Dublin, Ireland

  • This afternoon the group will bid farewell to Achill and make their way back to Dublin.  We will have a special going away dinner and prepare for the journey home.
