Optional: A Sacred Journey into the Heart of Celtic Scotland  ~ October 16–20, 2025

For those seeking a deeper encounter with the sacred rhythms of the Celtic world, this optional post-pilgrimage extension offers a rare opportunity to experience the rugged beauty, storied history, and spiritual resonance of Scotland’s western coast and capital city.

Led jointly by Rev. Liz Nau and Rev. Dr. Gene McAfee, transitional pastor of Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, this intimate extension is designed to be a pilgrimage within a pilgrimage—a time of reflection, connection, and renewal. This experience includes flights, guides, accommodations, local transport, most meals, and spiritual programming.

Itinerary Overview

Thursday, October 16 – Belfast to Oban

Your journey begins with a group flight from Belfast to Glasgow (included), followed by a private coach ride through the rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands. The group will stop in the picturesque harbor town of Oban, where we’ll tour the famed Oban Distillery, learning the time-honored process of crafting single malt Scotch.  Enjoy a welcome dinner and your first overnight in this coastal retreat.
Included: Flight, private transfer, distillery visit, dinner, overnight in Oban

Friday, October 17 – Pilgrimage to Iona

Today’s destination is the sacred island of Iona, a place long revered as one of the most important centers of Celtic Christianity. After a scenic ferry ride, pilgrims will explore this “thin place,” where the veil between heaven and earth feels especially near. The day includes a guided visit to the historic Iona Abbey, with time for reflection, spiritual engagement, and quiet walking along its wind-swept shores.
Included: Breakfast, ferry to Iona, full-day guided tour, lunch, dinner, overnight in Oban

Saturday, October 18 – Stirling Castle & Arrival in Edinburgh

Depart Oban and travel through the Highlands, stopping en route to tour Stirling Castle, once home to Mary, Queen of Scots, and central to the story of William Wallace. The castle offers breathtaking views and a vivid window into Scotland’s royal, religious,  and military history.
The journey continues to Edinburgh, where guests will settle into a centrally located hotel near St. Giles before joining a brief orientation walking tour of the Old Town.

Included: Breakfast, guided castle visit, coach transfer, walking tour, overnight in Edinburgh

Sunday, October 19 – St. Giles Cathedral, Walking Tour & Free Time

Begin the day with a special worship service at St. Giles Cathedral, arranged and led by Rev. McAfee, who previously served at this historic church. This rare moment of shared prayer and reflection will be followed by a group lunch discussion on the spiritual legacy of the Reformed tradition in Scotland.  The afternoon brings a guided walking tour of Edinburgh’s storied Royal Mile—from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse—including Greyfriars Kirkyard, filled with folklore, literary ties, and mystery.  The rest of the afternoon is free for personal exploration, shopping, or quiet contemplation before our final night together in Edinburgh.
Included: Breakfast, worship service, group lunch, guided walking tour, dinner and overnight in Edinburgh

Monday, October 20 – Departure

After breakfast, travelers will transfer to the airport for flights home.
Return airfare is included for those departing from Cleveland, Ohio.

Included: Breakfast, airport transfer, return flight (Cleveland-based travelers)

What’s Included:

  • Flight from Belfast to Glasgow

  • Return flight to the U.S. (for Cleveland travelers)

  • Private coach transportation throughout the program

  • 4 nights in well-located 3–4 star hotels

  • Daily full Scottish breakfast

  • 3 dinners and 1 group lunch

  • Full-day guided tour to Iona

  • Visit to Stirling Castle

  • Edinburgh orientation & walking tour

  • Tour & tasting at Oban Distillery

  • Worship at St. Giles Cathedral

  • Leadership and spiritual guidance from Rev. Nau and Rev. McAfee

Final Pricing

Double Occupancy: $2,100 per person

Single Occupancy: $2,400

Note: Original estimates were $1,800 and $2,200 respectively. The increase reflects current exchange rates and elevated costs in Scotland. Despite this, we believe the value remains exceptional given what is included.
